Skin disorders like psoriasis and vitiligo on a very general note tend to drive down a patient’s Quality of Life (QoL), which goes beyond the pain that’s caused by the disease itself. Noticing this, dermatologist and derma-tech companies invested an influx of resources to come up with treatments and devices which could help these patients lead a normal life. Some of the most common treatment options involve the use of “UV Phototherapy,” which involves the use of UV light to treat such skin disorders. Excimer lasers or mercury gas lamp light sources are the two most common options, which expose the patient’s skin to UV light from lamps and/ or phototherapy units. However, due to their poor beam quality (higher-mode structure and high divergence), they present the risk of inducing several side effects. They are also potentially harmful to the environment as well due to their use of toxic gases.

The ultimate motive then is fairly simple: to improve the patient’s QoL. The company does so with its flagship offering, the Psoria- Light™. The device delivers high dosages of targeted Ultra-Violet (UV) light to affected skin using deep proprietary UV LEDs. The unique aspect of Psoria Shield technology is that it is solely based on current revolutionary LED technology; LED technology as displayed and evidenced in the current consumer marketplace i.e. automotive illumination; home lighting, flashlights etc. LED’s bring solid state and reliability to products. The same is true with the use of LED powered NM wavelength power sources for medical applications. Psoria Shield ALONE is cleared and approved to use LED as a NB high energy power source for the treatment of Psoriasis, Vitiligo and Eczema: Psoria Shield LED technology is current “state of the art” and does not use the 20+ year old gas/electrode excited technology used by excimers and mercury vapor devices.

With the Psoria-Light, the company successfully revolutionized the dermatology landscape. But, things do not end there for the Psoria- Shield. In the days to come, the company plans to be launching their brand new product called the Aurora—a new LED technology for phototherapy.

The power source used by Aurora is the result of a Certified Space Technology transfer from the space program to Psoria-Shield. Aurora’s chip processed, high output power source array isbased on a unique LED (light/laser emitting diode) system for creating photon energy via the integration of a powered chip with proprietary diodes, which when excited produce a stream of specific wave length photons. It leverages green technology meaning, “no toxic gas exchange and lower maintenance costs.”

Aurora is smaller and weighs less than a third of what Psoria- Light does. despite the addition of a secondary holster for an additional hand piece, the device maintains a significantly smaller profile. It contains two ergonomic hand pieces with proprietary connectors to provide operator ease-of-use, improving operator comfort for longer treatment sessions. One hand piece is dedicated to UVB and the other for UVA applications. The UVA hand piece’s connector site is engineered to be expanded to accommodate other wave lengths for subsequent treatment modalities. The hand piece indicates the operating values of the system settings in use. The square aperture hand piece provides an unobstructed view of the treatment area to the operator. Treatment records are stored by patient ID numbers and are printed out at the end of each treatment session for inclusion in the patient’s medical file via USB printer. The ergonomically designed touch screen control panel integrated into the base, provides the operator an easy selection of treatment modalities, selection of skin type, and energy delivery options for the clinical treatment parameters selected by the clinical operator. The unit is compact, air cooled, lightweight, extremely quiet, and uses advanced solid-state circuits for maximum operating efficiency and longevity. The small size and light weight provides easy mobility and transportation for multiple site operators. The unit is completely re-designed to provide extended reliability and ease-of-service. Upon start up, self-check program is integrated into the OS to identify any component problems. “This device is designed to be expandable to accommodate additional handpieces that when cleared maybe used for conditions like acne, skin resurfacing, spider veins, among others. The air cooled, quiet, light-weight platform is flexible for both NB UV-A (PUVA) & B. The platform is expandable to specific LED emitter platforms that utilize the application of specific wavelength treatment emissions. That would also allow us to utilize that technology to make and transfer options to the physicians for possible home utilization of smaller more compact devices,” concludes Yorke.
